Walking tour: Orang-utans of Kalimantan

Orang-utans of Kalimantan, 4 days

The orang-utan rehabilitation centre at Tanjung Putting Nature Reserve are like nowhere else in Indonesia. The reserve is covered by a complex mosaic of diverse lowland habitats, mangrove swamps, tropical rain forest and lakes. This incredible mosaic shelters a diverse fauna and flora, with a high population of several endangered primates.

However, Tanjung Putting is foremost known for its orang-utans. Here, serious efforts are made to bring the orang-utans back into their natural living environment. By small-motorized boat you will sail the small rivers that flow through the amazing jungle. We will visit Camp Leakey, where orang-utans are fed by hand and we will make a soft trekking through the forest in search of wild orang-utans and other animals. You will spend the nights on board and our cook joins the team to prepare you delicious meals.

The boat used for this trip has a closed deck as well as an open one. Mattresses and mosquito nets are provided. There is a simple toilet and a mandi room. Overnight on board will be an amazing experience, falling asleep by forest sounds, while a thousand stars shine down on you. A remarkable phenomenon, that occasional occurs after heavy rain, is the natural illumination in the Nipa palms during the night. This energy-saving illumination is provided by millions of insects. You will feel like living a fairytale!
